I. Name

CienCień is an independent curatorial platform for post-disciplinary creative practice. Its name – derived from the Spanish cien (hundred) and Polish cień (shadow) – evokes the intersection of multiple, overlooked perspectives, forming new constellations of meaning.

II. Vision

Offering a hybrid space for collective presence, artistic research and cultural exchange, the platform’s evolving program includes exhibitions, residencies, and site-responsive formats that blur disciplinary boundaries and invite artistic experimentation.

CienCień’s ethos is grounded in transcultural dialogue, informed by the collective’s experience of cultural hybridity. Positioned between Spain, Poland, and Switzerland, the platform operates as both a bridge and a laboratory for cultural translation, mapping alternative artistic ecologies and new relational cartographies beyond dominant cultural centres. Its curatorial practice explores belonging and coexistence, using the visual and sensory as shared ground for empathy, dialogue, and ethical exchange.

Rooted in ecological and social awareness, CienCień promotes sustainable modes of artistic production and long-term collaboration. Rather than prescribing a single mode of working, it encourages context-sensitive approaches that respond to contemporary urgencies with care, curiosity, and ethical consideration.

III. Statement

CienCień was launched in Basel in 2025 by a collective of creatives working across visual art, cultural studies and design. The initiative emerged from a shared interest in alternative models of cultural production and exchange between communities, disciplines and ways of thinking.

The platform operates through a hybrid and nomadic model, foregoing a permanent location in favour of temporary spaces tailored to the specific needs of each project. This flexibility enables context-responsive programming, allowing each initiative to grow from its environment rather than being constrained by institutional frameworks. An established curatorial team directs the artistic processes, remaining open to guest collaborations and embracing a flexible, nomadic approach to each project.
